Our client is the Support Services Division of this expanding international facilities Group which manages the design, construction and operation of sites for clients who need to operate in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

They are currently seeking a Handyman – Diesel Engines to work at Kandahar Air Field and Camp Bastion, Southern Afghanistan.

Reporting to the Camp Services Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing the basic daily checks and servicing of the diesel engines powering the electrical generators.

The successful candidate will carry out the servicing in accordance with the manufacturers handling manual and directives.

This will include; oil change, change of all diesel filters, engine air filter change, engine wash, vacuum-cleaning, cleaning of engine cooler, control of coolant levels, replacement of intake filters (filter bags), cleaning the HES area, control of the emergency stop engine and control of the inspection pipe for the water pump.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge and Skills:

You should be an energetic and accomplished English speaking Diesel Handyman / Mechanic who can ideally speak fluently at least one other language which may be your native language.

Your work experience should ideally be supported by a relevant trade qualification.

You should possess a good level of knowledge of diesel engines and you should have extensive experience with maintaining Field Power Generation Sets (up to and including 7000 KVA).

You will have experience of servicing and repairing diesel engines using the appropriate tools, performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed, determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.

Experience of Volvo Penta Engines (Model TAD 1032GE, 1500 rpm, 292kW/397HP) and experience of Scania diesel Engines is highly desirable.

You should possess excellent communication skills in English and one other language, and be able to adapt to rapid changes in a positive manner, work to tight deadlines and pay attention to the detail.

Superb communication skills and instant credibility are essential as you will be inter-facing with a number of people from different backgrounds, nationalities and religions.

This is an outstanding challenge for a Diesel Handyman / Mechanic looking for something different.

The basic salary is paid in US Dollars and is tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee. In addition there is an annual bonus payable after 12 month’s service which is also paid in Euros and tax free for an Ex-Patriate employee. Shared accommodation, laundry, local transport, permanent disability and death benefit, bereavement leave and meals are all provided free. In addition you will have the use of a phone to call family and friends and also use of the internet for e-mails etc.

Ex-Patriate employees will receive 40 days annual leave per year. In addition Ex-Patriate employees will receive 1 paid return economy flight in their first year of employment and thereafter 2 return economy flights per year. Mobilization and De-Mobilization flights are also paid for by our client.
