Job Description:

The purpose of the Food Security Consultant position is to assist International Medical Corps in tackling some of the underlying causes of malnutrition by integrating livelihood activities in to International Medical Corps programs in Kenyan and Ethiopia.


Main duties & Responsibilities:
• Conduct assessments of the food security and livelihoods situation and their impact on nutrition as well as the parameters of the problem, whether acute or chronic.

• Make technical recommendations for appropriate activities, both for initial disaster response phase and for longer-term disaster risk reduction or rebuilding of livelihoods integrated into different IMC nutrition projects in Kenya and Ethiopia.

• Actively represent International Medical Corps in agriculture and food security sector discussions with stakeholders during the assessment period.

• Design the adapted projects and develop proposals to be submitted by International Medical Corps ensuring that proposed activities and programs align with best practice in the food security sector. As appropriate, apply new developments in the agriculture and food security sector to International Medical Corps programming.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications
1. Advanced degree required in Agriculture or other relevant field, 5-7 years of international experience in food security, agriculture, and livelihoods, including experience in emergency response, recovery, and long term-development following natural disaster.
2. An up-to date understanding of food security, risk reduction, emergency response, sustainable development and livelihoods concepts.
3. Knowledge in designing and implementing appropriate and effective safety nets, including cash and/or food transfer programming.
4. Familiarity with design and programming processes of different donors and a general familiarity with recent initiatives such as Feed the Future.
5. Professional experience in areas of global food policy and food security with demonstrated knowledge of global trends in food security and the ability to analyze implications for regions and countries, through publications, work experience, or other means.
6. Proficient analytical skills that demonstrate an understanding of the current concepts, priorities, and issues in program monitoring, data collection and evaluation.
7. Skills in technical proposal writing, designing and implementing food security programs
8. Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments within International Medical Corps, donors, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
