International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.
Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility for rapid response to emergencies. International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.
Background:
International Medical Corps is working to improve services for displaced Syrians along the Turkey border. Current programming areas include WASH, health, and mental health and psychosocial support services. Through these services, International Medical Corps aims to reduce protection risks, including risks of GBV.
Sexual violence and other forms of GBV are of increasing concern in the Syrian crisis. Strong social norms attributing shame to survivors of GBV and their families make it difficult for survivors to seek services. Service providers, likewise, may be reluctant to acknowledge and address issues of GBV. The consultant will work with service providers to increase their understanding of GBV principles and their capacity to provide basic support to survivors of violence. The consultant will further work with community groups and partner agencies to identify areas for additional GBV prevention and response activities.
Scope of Work:
The consultant will support the integration of protection principles into ongoing humanitarian relief operations serving displaced Syrians. The consultant will coordinate with psychosocial, WASH and medical program staff, community groups and partner agencies to strengthen capacity for gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response.
Responsibilities and deliverables:
• Organize and lead trainings for healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses and first responders. Trainings will include do-no-harm and GBV guiding principles, protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), and basic health response for sexual violence.
• Coordinate with agencies conducting training on clinical management of sexual violence.
• Organize and lead trainings for psychosocial outreach staff and volunteers on integration of GBV principles and basic support for survivors.
• Organize and lead basic GBV trainings for WASH and other staff/volunteers.
• Build relationships with religious leaders and women’s associations along Turkish/Syrian border
• Coordinate with religious leaders and women’s associations to increase support and information networks.
• Coordinate with partner agencies, government officials and others as appropriate.
• Prepare training reports and provide regular updates to program management.
• Prepare an end-of-assignment report outlining accomplishments, challenges and recommendations for further interventions.
Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in social work, psychology or similarly appropriate educational/professional background
• Experience in gender-based violence programming
• Experience organizing and leading trainings
• Experience in direct support of survivors of sexual violence
• Experience in the Middle East or similar contexts preferred
• Arabic language skills strongly preferred
