Child Growth Monitor - Engineering Manager

It has thousands of programs fighting hunger in more than 30 countries. Child Growth Monitor (CGM) (www.childgrowthmonitor.org) is Welthungerhilfe's digital innovation project leveraging AI to fight child malnutrition. Around 200 million children around the world are suffering from malnutrition. Malnutrition contributes to one-third of deaths of children under the age of five. In the fight against malnutrition, detection is the first important step, but this is not an easy task: Measuring children with traditional methods is still a complex, slow, and expensive task, frequently resulting in poor data and wrong assessments of the child's health. Early detection of malnutrition becomes the key for initiating treatment, minimizing the risk of complications, and saving lives by reducing the chances of death to a great extent. Our solution to measure children replaces hardware (bulky measuring boards and physical scales) with off the shelf cell phones and AI. CGM uses augmented reality enabled smartphones to record 3D scans of children. Artificial Intelligence is used to predict their height, weight and middle upper-arm circumference needed to know the nutritional status of the children. What you would do to help us save millions of children's lives: We are looking for you as an experienced Engineering Manager with strong prior software development experience who will be leading a dedicated team of software engineers distributed globally. You should be someone who likes the idea of working on an AI project for a non-profit social cause that can impact the lives of 200 million children throughout the world. This posting concerns a full-time assignment working for Welthungerhilfe's CGM in a freelance/consultant capacity, working in a remote setting. Your Responsibilities: Leadership and Team Management: Lead, mentor, and support a diverse team of Android, Backend, Frontend, Quality Assurance and DevSecOps Engineers Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team. Manage team dynamics, resolve conflicts, and ensure a productive work environment. Strategic Planning and Execution: Collaborate with the Head of Product, Head of Project, stakeholders, and other team leads to define product vision, roadmaps, and development strategies. Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of software releases, ensuring they meet quality standards, and timeline goals. Implement agile methodology practices effectively, facilitating sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and reviews. Work with the Head of Product to manage and prioritize the product backlog Technical Oversight and Decision-Making: Provide technical leadership in the development of the Android application, backend systems, DevOps and security Make key architectural decisions, ensuring they align with the product's goals and technical requirements. Stay abreast of technological advancements and trends in AI, deep learning, computer vision, and mobile development to guide the team's technical strategy. Quality Assurance and Risk Management: Implement and oversee quality assurance processes, including code reviews, automated testing, and performance monitoring. Identify potential risks in the development process and devise mitigation strategies to ensure project stability and security. Resource Management: Efficiently allocate resources, including personnel and technology, to meet project needs and priorities. Compliance and Ethical Considerations: Ensure the product adheres to relevant legal, ethical, and regulatory standards, especially those pertaining to healthcare data privacy and security. You have these skills to move us forward? Proven experience in software engineering, with a strong background in backend development, Android app development, or AI algorithm development. Prior leadership experience in managing cross-functional teams in a tech environment, preferably in AI product development. Familiarity with the technologies and frameworks mentioned (Python, Flask framework, Java, React, Vue, Azure, etc.) Prior experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure. Prior experience in system design and solution architecture Experience with agile methodologies and a track record of successful project management. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders. What You'll get?
