CMCC Position cod. 12713 Expert in Data-Driven Approaches for Regional Climate Analysis Deadline: May 15th, 2025 WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Division of Regional Models and geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) at the Institute for Climate Resilience (ICR) is seeking an Expert in Data-Driven Approaches for Regional Climate Analysis to support the design, development, and deployment of AI for data-driven applications in regional climate research. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the field of Regional Climate Model advanced statistical methods such as emulators and machine learning (ML), which are particularly relevant for high-resolution kilometre-scale downscaling. This role focuses on leveraging machine learning techniques to perform data-driven regional climate experiments and validation analysis at high spatial and temporal resolution. ROLE The Expert in Data-Driven Approaches for Regional Climate Analysis reports to the Head of the Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division and is responsible for developing and applying AI algorithms for data-driven applications in regional climate research as emulators, which are particularly relevant for high-resolution kilometer-scale downscaling, and contributing to the advancement of hybrid modeling at the regional scale. RESPONSIBILITIES The Expert in Data-Driven Approaches for Regional Climate Analysis will support the REMHI division with: Algorithm Development: Develop and improve AI algorithms (such as emulators and Machine-Learning methods) for downscaling climate data. System Design and Implementation: Design and deploy algorithms for data-driven approaches that can be trained either on an individual model or an ensemble of historical and future projections (made by Earth System Models or Regional Climate Models). Design and deploy algorithms for data-driven approaches that can be used to investigate a large range of future emission and land-use scenarios, or to focus on specific aspects of climate projection uncertainty. Data Processing: Process, analyze, and conduct validation and optimization using real-world observational datasets and simulations, ensuring high performance and accuracy of AI output. Handle large datasets for machine learning and climate analysis. High-Performance Computing (HPC): Optimize software and algorithms to run efficiently on HPC infrastructure. Collaborating with interdisciplinary and international teams to design and refine hybrid regional modelling methodologies. Contributing to scientific publications and reports, participating in international conferences, and engaging with research institutions, universities, and government agencies to enhance the provision of climate information and support interdisciplinary integration. REQUIREMENTS PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or related fields. Minimum of 3 years of work experience in the field of advanced statistical methods. Proven experience in regional numerical modeling, with specific expertise in models such as ICON, COSMO, or other models (facultative). Very good knowledge of the English language. Accuracy and good analytical skills. Proficiency in programming languages such as FORTRAN and Python. Experience with mathematical libraries and tools used for numerical analysis. Familiarity with Linux operating systems, with the ability to work across different platforms. Experience with climate data management programs such as CDO (Climate Data Operators) and NCO (NetCDF Operators). Ability to prepare technical/scientific documentation, including project reports and peer-reviewed papers. Availability to travel for limited periods. Willingness to attend face-to-face meetings at the REMHI headquarters in Caserta. Enthusiasm for research and the opportunity to work in a young, multidisciplinary team. DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally. The Managers will be based in Caserta CMCC office. Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience. Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract. Flexible working time as per internal policies.
