Job Description

Hays is working with one of Canada's leading high-rise construction developers on a role in the GTA. The developer is looking for a Chief/Senior estimator to lead from the front and run the entire estimating department. Please see job details below. The Chief/Senior Estimator is responsible for creating accurate quantity surveys of materials and labour for all trade categories, from conceptual design through working drawings as well as during the construction phase of all projects. The successful candidate must have extensive knowledge of residential construction and will be expected to interface regularly with trade contractors in order to obtain the most accurate and current pricing. What You’ll Do · Responsible for the generation and tracking of budget estimates from the pre-concept design stage to the construction document stage. · To obtain all necessary information that may be required from the consultants in order to prepare a complete estimate. · Verify unit cost pricing for each trade through historical data relevant to the type of project being budgeted. · In conjunction with the Project Manager, analyze and compare bids with projected budget costs. · Continually checking the work product for accuracy and completeness. · Present budgets to the Vice President after having reviewed them for accuracy and completeness · Present value engineering and cost-savings opportunities to clients as required to meet budget constraints. · Set schedule and work load priorities and organize an estimating schedule. · Process drawings, specifications, bulletins and all pertinent information to complete the assigned task. · Work in collaboration with others on the team. · Work with the Project Manager to assist in the tender process (i.e. review scopes of work and analyze costs as bids are received). · Responsible for updating the historical data to capture the most current unit rates. · Manage the subtrade pre-qualification process and master sub-trade list. · Mentoring and managing a team of junior and intermediate estimators. · Responsible for touring the supplier facilities before using the product. · Work in collaboration with the Project Scheduler and Project Directors as part of the estimating budgets. What You’ll Need · A recognized degree in Engineering or Construction Technology or specialized courses in Construction Management or equivalent experience and training. · Skilled in written and oral communication. · Training and knowledge of the employer’s in-house estimating system and basic knowledge of Procore. · Strong knowledge of project management software an asset (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, Plan Swift). · Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite but particularly excellent Microsoft Excel skills · Good organizational and management skills. · This job requires the ability to meet with in-house executives, estimate personal and clients, and set up job priorities to meet the company’s and client’s needs and requirements. · Must be able to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. · Must be able to work well under constant pressure of deadlines. · With regard to budgets and judgement calls, we must decide on the correct strategy and pricing for each component of the construction cost in order to provide our clients with the most competitive and accurate pricing available. · Must be able to present and describe your work to your supervisors, and other personnel from within and outside the company. · Experience of managing a team. · Experience within the GTA region.
