SBAR: Justification for Interventional Radiology Traveler Technologists During New Staff TrainingS SituationThe Interventional Radiology (IR) department will be onboarding new technologists to fill critical staffing gaps. However, due to the specialized nature of IR procedures and the steep learning curve, full competency for new staff can take up to 12 months. In the interim, maintaining safe, efficient operations and full procedural coverage requires the continued use of experienced traveler technologists.B BackgroundIR is a high-acuity, procedure-driven department that relies on a skilled, knowledgeable team to ensure patient safety, clinical accuracy, and efficiency. Training new technologists involves extensive shadowing, equipment familiarization, procedural preparation, product and anatomy knowledge, and compliance with safety protocols. Historically, operating without adequate coverage during onboarding has led to procedure delays and increased staff burnout. A AssessmentWithout traveler support during this training volumes may be reduced, affecting patient access and departmental revenueExisting staff will face unsustainable workloads, risking burnout and potential turnoverNew hires may feel rushed into roles they are not yet prepared for, increasing the risk of errors and undermining long-term retentionTraining quality may suffer, compromising the effectiveness and confidence of new staffMaintaining experienced travelers ensures that patient care continues uninterrupted and that new hires are trained thoroughly and safely over the necessary timeline.R RecommendationContinue the use of IR traveler technologists for up to 9 months while new staff are trained to full competency.
