Job Description

Automation/Electrical Reliability Engineer Location: Balcones, Texas (Near San Antonio, Texas) Job Summary We are seeking a highly skilled Automation/Electrical Reliability Engineer to lead and ensure the operational reliability of electrical, instrumentation, automation, and control systems within our industrial facility. This role involves end-to-end responsibility for system design, PLC/HMI programming, preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, root cause analysis, and continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in electrical and automation engineering, hands-on experience with PLCs, and a proactive approach to reliability and performance optimization. Key Responsibilities Reliability & Maintenance Ensure ongoing reliability of electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment (MV & LV systems, switchgear, MCCs, motors, grounding, lighting, PLCs, HMIs). Design, implement, and monitor preventive and predictive maintenance programs. Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions to minimize system failures. Collect and analyze equipment maintenance history and drive continuous improvement strategies using Six Sigma and reliability methodologies such as RCA, RCI, FMEA, Fishbone, etc. Automation & Control Systems Design, configure, and test PLC logic (ControlLogix) and HMI systems. Maintain and update interlocks, backups, and integrate new equipment into PLC/HMI platforms. Manage hardware/software modifications and ensure system security and performance. Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to improve process automation and interface usability. Project Management & Engineering Execute and control capital and expense projects up to $500K. Support engineering, specification, procurement, and commissioning of new electrical and automation assets. Coordinate with OEMs to troubleshoot, repair, or upgrade critical systems. Maintain technical documentation, drawings, reports, and standard operating procedures. Leadership & Team Collaboration Supervise and mentor the Electrical & Instrumentation Team. Provide technical support and training to plant personnel. Oversee the work of contractors and electricians to ensure quality and safety. Collaborate across departments to define inspection and maintenance plans, project scopes, and downtime strategies. Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with CEMEX, OSHA, MSHA, and other industry regulations. Implement IP restrictions, certificate-based API security, 2FA, and encryption protocols. Champion a strong safety culture during all field and engineering activities. Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Automation, or Electronics Engineering. Minimum 5 years of experience with ControlLogix PLC and HMI programming. Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical system design and maintenance (MV & LV). Minimum 3 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment (cement plant preferred). Strong understanding of electrical codes, regulatory standards, and industrial control systems. Hands-on experience in automation process design, implementation, and system integration. Preferred Skills & Attributes Strong knowledge of electrical and automation equipment including transformers, motors, switchgear, and distribution systems. Proficiency in CI/CD automation, system simulation, and performance monitoring tools. Familiarity with reliability KPIs, statistical downtime analysis, and life-cycle cost analysis. Excellent communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and drive high-impact results. Working Conditions Combination of office and field work in an industrial plant setting. Accessibility outside normal working hours as needed. Domestic travel may be required for technical support or project implementation.
