1" tabindex="0" aria-disabled="false" role="listbox" aria-expanded="false" aria-multiselectable="false" id="select_1" aria-owns="select_container_2" aria-invalid="false"> en Deutsch Italiano English Junior Researcher to conduct passive acoustic monitoring and point count of birds Bozen/Bolzano full-time Institute for Alpine Environment The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of landscape ecology, global change, biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development. For the project Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol (BMS) and associated biodiversity monitoring projects, we invite applications for a position of junior researcher supporting the field survey of birds (expert-based and automated) as well as working on data management and databases. The ideal candidate has survey experience with bird species, bird songs and with automated recordings/devices for ecoacoustic research. The point count study area will be the whole province of South Tyrol, Italy (from valley floors to alpine environment). Bird data to analyze will be from different projects where we are involved, spanning from the Eastern Alps to the entire Italian National Parks. The working location is Bolzano/Bozen. Furthermore, intensive fieldwork will occur from April to July, also at high altitudes, and analysis and sound identification will be carried out from autumn to spring. Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol (BMS) is an ongoing survey of biodiversity that serves as basic research, but it is also intended to provide a scientific base for political decisions concerning spatial planning, agriculture, and nature conservation. BMS surveys animal and plant groups that react sensitively to climate and/or land-use changes, at habitat and landscape level. These surveys occur in 320 terrestrial sites distributed over the entire province of South Tyrol (7400 km²), including a large share of the diversity of habitats in the region. Within the standard program we survey birds by means of point count and Audiomoths. For details, please consult our webpage: biodiversity.eurac.edu Moreover, our Institute participates in different projects involving passive acoustic monitoring of birds e.g., the European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa), PNRR and Horizon Europe. Tasks Classify and identify bird songs to automate their identification. Conduct bird surveys in various landscapes using point count and automated recordings. Data management, harmonization, and database import (field and recorded data). Intensive fieldwork also in sometimes challenging environments and climates. Organization of work in collaboration with both colleagues of the Institute of Alpine Environment and from other institutions (University of Milan, ISPRA, Carinthia University of Applied Sciences). Requirements Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or environmental sciences. Good knowledge of bird songs and species. Experiences in monitoring birds (by means of point count and automated recordings). Good Knowledge in AI and recorded data manipulation. Good knowledge of R/Python language is advantageous. Good knowledge of Audiomoth and/or Song Meter Micro 2 devices is advantageous. Good English is mandatory (both writing and speaking), Italian skills advantageous. Driving license “B”. Willingness and suitability to work in alpine areas. Good interpersonal and collaborative skills. Efficient organization skills to manage fieldwork both autonomously and in collaboration with colleagues.
