We have an exciting opportunity for a European IP Counsel to join our Specialty Diagnostics Group’s (SDG) IP team supporting one or more European-based Divisions within the Group. As European IP Counsel, you will lead strategic and pragmatic patent portfolio development, including identifying, managing, and addressing patent opportunities and risks in a dynamic and commercially active environment. You will also provide IP training and support at multiple European SDG sites and assist with European oppositions as needed. This role will work closely with legal, R&D, and business teams. We are happy to offer the role as fully remote (working from home), based anywhere in Europe. Some international travel may be required - up to 10% per annum, including overnight stays. European Qualified patent attorneys at law firms are encouraged to apply. Our Organisation This role is within our SDG, which has over 40 locations worldwide. The divisions focus on in vitro diagnostics, including test kits, reagents, culture media, instruments, and related products for health care, clinical, pharmaceutical, and industrial laboratories. What will you do? Conduct competitive analysis and IP landscaping, providing pragmatic advice on competitor IP risks and mitigation strategies. Offer pragmatic advice on transactions, disputes, oppositions, and risks, collaborating with internal teams to adapt strategies. Improve existing processes and lead the development of new ones. Work collaboratively across organizational and geographic boundaries, including managing outside counsel. Perform other duties as assigned to support Thermo Fisher’s Mission and the IP department. Who we are looking for UK or European qualified patent attorney with at least 5 years of successful patent preparation and prosecution experience in Europe, focused on life sciences and/or diagnostics. Patent opposition experience is a plus. Experience with Freedom to Operate analyses and risk mitigation activities. Experience handling contracts of simple to medium complexity. Fluent in English; multilingual skills in European languages are preferred. Strong situational awareness to adjust communication and risk strategies according to business priorities. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of tailoring approaches to diverse audiences. Proactive, collaborative, and with a can-do attitude.
