Job Description
The Molding Tooling Senior Engineer position impact in the tooling development, maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives within our manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for the performance and upkeep of high-precision injection or compression molds, and will play a key role in supporting production, tooling life-cycle management, and engineering changes. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in toolmaking, mold design, and toolroom operations, especially in the automotive or high-volume manufacturing industry Education and Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tool Engineering, or equivalent technical training with extensive experience. 5–10 years of experience in tool design, toolmaking, or tooling maintenance in a manufacturing or automotive environment. Strong knowledge of injection/compression mold construction, hot runner systems, tool steels, and surface treatments. Skilled in interpreting complex tool designs, CAD drawings, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing). Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, AutoCAD) and mold simulation tools is a plus. Hands-on experience in toolroom equipment: milling, turning, EDM, grinding, etc. Familiar with APQP, PPAP, and change management processes in the automotive industry. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills. Mold Design or Tooling Certifications (e.g., from SME, NTMA) Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt or higher) CNC Programming Certification (e.g., Mastercam) Key Responsibilities: Oversee the repair, modification, and preventive maintenance of production molds (injection, compression, or transfer) to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime. Provide technical support in new tool development, mold trials, and tool validations. Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for tool-related quality or production issues. Create and review technical documentation including tool drawings, BOMs, maintenance plans, and troubleshooting guides. Manage tooling improvements, upgrades, and engineering changes in collaboration with Product and Process Engineering teams. Coordinate with external toolmakers for tool design, fabrication, refurbishment, and corrective work. Support cost-reduction initiatives by extending tooling life and optimizing tool performance. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to toolmakers and junior engineers in the toolroom. Ensure safe work practices in the toolshop and compliance with internal and industry standards (e.g., IATF 16949, ISO 9001). Manage tool inventory, spare parts, and preventive maintenance schedules using CMMS or equivalent systems. Attend visits from customers, suppliers or colleagues from other locations as required Monitor validation of new or transferred equipment, detect and resolve operational problems that result. Meet and satisfy specific customer requirements. Work in coordination with other departments to improve plant-wide productivity. Create and manage new projects for capital investment, human resource and new equipment requirements, or additional tooling to support operational or replacement requirements. Attend TCB (Technical Change Board) meetings. Ensure the development and implementation of continuous improvement projects in the manufacturing process to reduce waste.
