Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical Tech Specialty: Surgical Techs Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 8.5 Experience: Required minimum experience in surgical settings preferred License: Certified Surgical Technologist Certifications: Basic Life Support Must-Have: Ability to read, write, and speak the English language Strong customer service and interpersonal skills Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers in the provision of patient care Ability to delegate to other team members as required Ability to multi-task is essential Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations is essential Strong detail orientation required Knowledge of surgical procedures required Basic computer skills are required Skill and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Skill and ability to handle multiple priorities, self-direct, and apply independent judgment Ability to think critically and adapt quickly to changing situations Description: The Certified Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. Has knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. Maintains the sterile field and other patient safety concerns. Gathers required instruments and supplies and serves as a surgical assistant as needed. Other duties as assigned include assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking ORs and perioperative areas. Ensures compliance with standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required as necessary. Responsible for checking supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assists with room setup, including opening sterile supplies. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications needed for procedures accurately and promptly. Performs appropriate surgical counts with circulators. Actively participates in procedure pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves for the surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure while maintaining an organized back table and operative field. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Acts in post-procedure pause, accounting for specimens properly. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Applies principles of asepsis to ensure prevention of infection and safety of patients and employees. Prepares case carts according to procedures and preference cards. Reviews surgical schedules and assists with preparation for future cases. Observes patient conditions and reports any changes or significant findings promptly. Plans proactively for the next steps in the procedure, adapting to emergencies as necessary. Maintains financial stewardship concerning supplies and equipment. Provides relationship-based patient-centered care consistent with population-specific characteristics. Partners with patients by verifying procedures. Practices using current clinical standards. Upholds policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration, promoting a positive work environment. Serves as a patient advocate, ensuring patient care and safety. Assists with cleaning rooms between cases and preparing rooms for the next patient. Assists in transporting patients and providing comfort and safety measures for specific age groups. Participates in performance improvement initiatives to enhance processes. Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments. Completes all initial and annual competencies and mandatory education. Encourages a positive learning environment for new hires and students. Strives to integrate organizational standards of behavior into daily work. Participates in training regarding new policies, processes, and equipment. Maintains knowledge of new technology introduced by surgeons. Completes all required duties as assigned. Assumes responsibility for other tasks as necessary. Ensures organization and cleanliness of the surgical area. Maintains stock and medical supplies as required. Complies with all policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
