SUMMARY: With supervision from the Project Engineer, the Senior Mechanical Designer creates mechanical drawings using Revit and coordinates with the design team using BIM. This role works as a member of the project design team to coordinate the design development, production, and delivery of engineering documents. Responsibilities include load calculations, system design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, and CA support. Some assignments require independent action and decision making. This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader. REQUIRED EDUCATION & KNOWLEDGE: High school diploma required. Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred. 5 years of mechanical drafting and/or design experience from concept to client delivery in HVAC Design, Building Mechanical Systems, and Central Utility Plants. Experience working on healthcare, government, education, and/or technology project design. Healthcare experience preferred. Basic knowledge of integrated design and architecturally significant buildings. Proficiency in Revit and BIM required. Knowledge of engineering principles and practices. Advanced knowledge of building codes. Advanced knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment. Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, sections diagrams and equipment schedules, and drawings. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES: Develops and modifies Revit models of mechanical systems and components including piping diagrams, HVAC distribution, equipment schedules, and control diagrams according to established standards and Revit modeling techniques with minimal input from the Project Engineer. Checks model for design interferences with other building elements and resolves conflicts. Produces equipment schedules and details making changes and adjustments as necessary with input from the engineering team. Sizes mechanical systems including pipe sizing, duct sizing, pressure drop calculations. Selects equipment using results of design calculations, such as VAV terminals, fan coil units, air handlers, and pumps under review of Project Engineer. Assists Team Leader and Project Manager in ensuring that documentation for all phases conforms to QA/QC and Johnston Best Practice Standards. Visits project sites during construction administration to conduct quality, progress, and compliance review with design documents. Mentors and directs the work of less experienced design team members. Actively seeks new knowledge related to engineering practices, principles, and regulation changes.
