Director of Software Engineering
Job Location
Paris, France
Job Description
About the job As the Software Engineering (SWE) Director at Biomemory, you will own the vision, strategy, and execution of all software activities, spending about 30% of your time on high-level architecture decisions and 70% on leading, scaling, and empowering the team . This is an intrapreneurial role with high autonomy , where you will recruit, shape, and guide a high-performing organization, and drive initiatives from concept to delivery, including outsourced parts. You will support the System Integration & Validation team, in charge of putting together all the components of the Biomemory system and verifying it, before delivery to internal operations or to customers. The position is based onsite in Paris, with flexibility for remote days when appropriate You will be reporting to the Chief Technology Officer , who drives the global system architecture and the implementation strategy. You will work with the Biomemory Program Director and the various groups within Biomemory to assure the timely execution and delivery of projects. You will contribute to building an impactful roadmap for Biomemory’s products and will own the software part of it. The software activities of Biomemory cover four domains with specific expertise and resources: Data Storage Management (50%) : This involves S3, CEPH, file systems, networking, databases, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), services, and APIs operating on servers. Development is primarily conducted internally. Data Processing (30%) : This encompasses encoding, decoding, compression, error-correcting code (ECC), signal processing, data mining, and artificial intelligence (AI). Development is predominantly internal. Embedded Software (10%) : This includes firmware, local control, automation scripts, APIs, and drivers. This area is mainly outsourced. IT Infrastructure (10%) : This covers IT resource management, GitLab, internal data centers, and security. These responsibilities are largely handled in-house. The team will conduct unit testing on its releases, while the System Integration & Validation group will be responsible for integration and end-to-end testing. Given the tight interdependencies, harmonious collaboration between both teams is essential. The software specifications are intrinsically linked to biotechnology, necessitating frequent interaction with the Chief Scientific Officer and the biotech team. You will ensure the high quality, robustness, documentation, and long-term maintainability of both internally and externally produced software. You will be responsible for recruiting and inspiring top talent (growing from 5 to 10-12 individuals in 2025), cultivating a robust team culture, and selecting external partners to achieve Biomemory's software-related objectives and facilitate the timely launch of commercial products and offerings. You will play a pivotal role in scaling up a breakthrough data storage technology. About you Candidates should possess a demonstrable history in both software architecture and engineering leadership, evidenced by a minimum of seven years of experience as a Developer and/or Software Architect. This experience should encompass projects involving commercial products or offerings, ranging from server-level data management to embedded software. A comprehensive understanding of computer systems, from software algorithms to hardware components, is requisite. Familiarity with Unix systems, particularly those based on the Linux kernel such as Ubuntu, is expected. Candidates should also demonstrate an awareness of industry standards governing software development for data center systems, along with proficiency in IT infrastructure management, networking protocols, and security. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic and technically proficient team leader, adept at constructing and deploying software for real-world applications. Rigor, comfort with agile methodologies, a strong engineering mindset, and a results-oriented approach are essential. Awareness of best development practices - including design patterns, source code management, commenting, testing, fuzzing, documentation, and CI/CD - and extensive experience in conducting in-depth code reviews are required. While staying current with technology to inform decisions, the primary focus of this role is enabling and empowering teams, rather than daily coding. Candidates should be motivated and accustomed to effective collaboration with experts across various technology domains to ensure optimized software functionality and performance. A proven record of successfully building and leading software teams from development to product launch phases is necessary, ideally for large systems integrating cloud interfaces, IT/server software, and embedded software. The position is based in Paris, or requires a willingness to relocate, and mandates fluency in English. Candidates should thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments and exhibit the energy and creativity to resolve complex problems, even when solutions are not immediately apparent. A strong desire to build a team, launch products, and contribute to the future of next-generation DNA data storage systems at Biomemory is highly valued. Technologies Biomemory creates sustainable DNA-based data storage systems, integrating synthetic biology, electronics, and software. Our unique roadmap combines hardware, software, and biotech for industry-first mass data storage equipment. We focus on modular, software-defined solutions with structured interfaces for seamless upgrades, continuously updating our software roadmap with advanced solutions using diverse technologies. System & Containers : Linux, Docker Storage & Databases : S3, Ceph, SQL, PostgreSQL Languages & Frameworks : Rust, C++, Python, Go, TypeScript, Shell scripts, NextJS, Protobuf, gRPC Caching & Observability : Redis, Grafana, Prometheus Automation & Infrastructure : Ansible, Terraform You will be instrumental in driving the evolution and deployment of this technology portfolio.
