Job Description
The tooling manager will oversee the maintenance, repair, and optimal functioning of 101 class mold used in our injection molding department in the Company. This role will direct and coordinate the day-to-day activities of internal mold technicians as well as coordinate repairs with external tool shops. This position will work very closely with the process engineering team to optimize the injection molding operations and with the tool room managers in other sister facilities to share and implement the company’s best practices. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise and lead a team of mold technicians and toolmakers Provide training, assign tasks, and ensure adherence to safety, quality and efficiency standards Manage preventive maintenance and repair schedule Diagnose mold-related problems, conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive action. Lead, prioritize and coordinate timely repairs to restore molds to operational condition Work with process engineering to troubleshoot defects in press, driving accountability in the use of the escalation tool minimizing downtime Hands-On repair for most critical tools Responsible for developing and managing the annual tool room budget and capex Responsible for the department’s performance metrics and develops cross-functional plans to improve tool reliability and uptime Work with the engineering team to identify spare parts needed by tool Maintain adequate stock of spare parts and coordinate procurement of missing stock Use MES system to record details of maintenance records and tools availability Work closely with production, engineering, quality assurance to align mold readiness with production schedules Participate in mold design reviews and recommend changes to improve mold reliability Identify trends and recurring issues and implement root- causes fixes. Work safely and maintain a safe, organized and clean working environment (inside and outside the tool room) by ensuring the team complies with procedures, rules, and regulations Ensure compliance with local, municipal, state and federal laws and regulations Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering 10 years of hands on experience in tool room (mold repair and mold maker experience) 5 years of tool room management/leadership experience in high mix high volume industry Experience with CNC machining, EDM, welding (laser, micro, tig) Familiarity with tolerances, GD&T, and blueprint reading Strong competence in project management Experience leading tooling teams in a fast-paced MFG environment, in a manner that drives teamwork, collaboration and a high degree of integrity Superior problem solving and analytical skills (both quantitative and qualitative) Injection molding Process Engineering knowledge Bilingual (Spanish- English) Demonstrated passion for solving problems and operational excellence Focused, organized, results-oriented individual Successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual, able to achieve high impact in an unstructured environment PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degree preferred Creo proficiency Lean Six Sigma Champion or Black Belt certification RJG Certification
