Financial Legal Support Officer

Overview Financial Legal Support Officer role at FAO. The post is located in FAO headquarters, Rome, Italy, within the Finance Division (CSF) Treasury and Banking Operations Branch (CSFT). The role provides procedural and legal support to ensure efficient investment, payment, and banking services and supports contracting activities in compliance with FAO rules and regulations. The Financial Legal Support Officer reports to the Senior Finance Officer, Head of Treasury and Banking. Responsibilities Provides advisory support on legal aspects related to banking, investment or payment processes, liaising with the Legal Office as appropriate and, for matters falling within its competence, undertakes necessary consultations and/or obtains clearances as needed. Participates in meetings with financial counterparties to assist in negotiation of contractual terms and conditions and in case of potential disputes. Drafts complex contracts, reviews investment, payment and banking agreements, formulates special legal provisions and/or formal letters that may have legal implications, and liaises with the Legal Office for clearance. Drafts guidelines, documents and communications related to treasury and banking operations on legal matters and risk mitigation to ensure knowledge sharing and clear information transfer. Prepares reviews of specific financial regulatory changes that may impact the work of the Treasury and Banking Operations Branch; coordinates with the Legal Office and recognizes the Legal Office’s role as the sole unit with formal competence to advise the organization on legal matters. Assists in the initial review of financial contracts before submission for legal clearance. Minimum Requirements Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in law, with emphasis on commercial contract law. A first-level degree in law plus two years of relevant experience and/or professional qualification may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Five years of professional legal experience in commercial contract law, including at least two years in finance, banking, asset management, or financial services. Working knowledge (proficiency level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (level B) of one other official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish). Experience within international institutions (central banks, multilateral entities, sovereign funds, banks, asset management firms). Ability to draft complex contracts in English.
