Job Description

Job Function: The Clerk of Work's primary duty is to act as an on-site quality control and safety supervisor, ensuring construction work aligns with approved plans, specifications, and safety standards. Key responsibilities include conducting regular site inspections, documenting findings, coordinating with contractors and engineers, and acting as the client's representative to report progress, issues, and ensure quality. QUALIFICATIONS: BSc, BTech or NDip - in Civil Engineering EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A minimum of 3-5 years' relevant work experience in a civil engineering consultancy environment. Experience working on SANRAL jobs as a Clerk of Works is a must. JOB DESCRIPTION Quality Assurance & Control: Inspect workmanship and materials: Conduct regular, thorough inspections of all site activities and materials to ensure they meet the quality standards and specifications outlined in the project documents. Check against plans: Verify that the work being performed adheres strictly to the architectural and engineering drawings, contracts, and relevant regulations. Site Supervision & Reporting: On-site presence: Be physically present on the construction site to monitor progress and quality continuously. Record keeping: Maintain detailed records, including daily diaries, progress reports, and documentation of issues or incidents. Report preparation: Prepare and distribute regular, detailed reports on work quality, progress, site activities, and any deviations to senior management, architects, and clients. Personal Development and Attributes: Discusses technical theory applicable to a project and uses technical knowledge to discuss technical challenges and offers meaningful insights, on site. Performs delegated engineering tasks under incrementally less supervision from the resident engineer responsible for the project. Carries out all his/her tasks and duties in a thoroughly professional and efficient manner. Is self-motivated and effectively manages own time. Submits all timesheets, leave applications, mileage claims etc., accurately and timeously. Project Construction Management: Assists the Assistant Resident Engineer in supervising all works and all staff under the works that you are assigned to and reports to the Assistant Resident Engineer and where required to the Resident Engineer (RE). Sets up and maintains systems of financial and budget control for all the works you are assigned to. Supervises the physical measurement of the works by the relevant site staff for agreement with the Contractor for all the works you are assigned to. Assists in recording of the minutes for meetings held. Maintains all records of quantities measured and agreed for the works you are assigned to. Draws up all final quantities for agreement with the Contractor for the works you are assigned to. Prepares all as-built drawings for the works you are assigned to. Prepares all material-as-built summary sheets pertaining to the works you are assigned to. Keeps a daily diary of the works you are assigned to. Monitors all the works you are assigned to for compliance with the specified requirements in conjunction with the Materials Technician and the Surveyor. Supplies and forwards a photographic record of all the works that you are assigned to, to the Assistant Resident Engineer. Assists the RE with the preparation of the monthly reports. Familiarises yourself with the content of all the project documentation and specifications, namely: General Conditions of Contract for Construction (correct edition); The Project Document and Drawings (as revised from time to time); COLTO Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Works for State Authorities (correct edition); Chapter 13: South African Road Traffic Manual; Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations (BOHSS, correct edition); Construction Regulations (as revised). Other specifications related to the work you are responsible for Health and Safety, Contract Administration and Procurement: Ensures that the site operates in accordance with the current Occupational Health and Safety Act.
