Job Description
Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Acute Care Duration: 15 weeks Shift: Full Time, Day/Night Rotation, Holiday Rotation Hours per Shift: 36 hours/week Experience: Two years in the Emergency Department License: Registered Nurse Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS Must-Have: - One year of acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse - BLS and ACLS Certification (AHA or RQI only) Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. He/She applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. He/She utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. The ED RN assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups. He/She connects with patients and families during triage, identifying initial management needs and assigning priority of care in accordance with established standards. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. He/She conducts a primary assessment of critical needs, detects and documents deviations from norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames, and identifies necessary steps/interventions. The ED RN uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. He/She identifies contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event. The ED RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. He/She reassesses the patient to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. The ED RN makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and teaches the patient what is needed for continued care and healing at home. He/She assesses patient/family learning styles and structures education sessions to maximize understanding. The ED RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. He/She seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging them as the central focus of care and services. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed of care processes and anticipates patient/family needs. The ED RN maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit. He/She updates patient communication boards throughout the ED stay.
