Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities Conceptual Design & Development: Lead the development of mechanical systems and components, from concept through to final production. Ensure designs are innovative, cost-effective, and meet client specifications and functional requirements. Advanced CAD Modelling: Create detailed 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks. Maintain documentation and adhere to internal CAD and design standards. Prototype Development & Testing: Collaborate with manufacturing and procurement teams to develop and test prototypes. Analyse test data and iterate designs for improved performance and reliability. Design Validation & Analysis: Perform FEA and other analytical techniques to validate designs. Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Project Management Support: Assist in project planning, including scheduling, risk analysis, and resource coordination. Track progress against milestones and support reporting to stakeholders. Cost Estimation & Budget Input: Provide input into cost estimates and budgets for components, systems, and projects. Identify and recommend cost-saving opportunities through smart design choices. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work across departments, including project management, production, procurement, and quality control. Ensure seamless execution from design to final delivery. Innovation & Technology Scouting: Stay abreast of new technologies, tools, and materials relevant to mechanical engineering. Continuously improve design practices and propose technical innovations. Technical Documentation & Reporting: Prepare and maintain accurate engineering documentation, including BOMs, technical specs, reports, and change logs. Support design reviews, customer presentations, and internal audits. Quality Assurance & Compliance: Ensure engineering work complies with internal standards and applicable industry regulations (e.g., ISO, ASME, SANS). Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications & Experience: Bachelor's or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. 0 to 3 years of relevant experience in mechanical design and/or engineering. Experience managing engineering tasks across the full project lifecycle. Exposure to industrial environments, preferably in mining, energy, or manufacturing sectors. Strong documentation and report-writing capabilities. Key Skills: Proficiency in SolidWorks and other 3D CAD tools. Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and other design validation tools. Basic project management skills including scheduling and reporting. Knowledge of cost estimation processes and BOM generation. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong communication and collaboration across teams. Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and mechanical systems. Familiarity with applicable engineering standards and regulations.
