Senior User Experience Designer

Job Description: The Senior UX Designer will lead and execute user experience activities across all four Ontario Digital Service (ODS) design phases— Discovery, Alpha, Beta, and Live —to design and deliver user-centred digital products and services. The candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to understand user needs, define business problems, and create design solutions that are accessible, intuitive, and effective. Key Responsibilities 1. Discovery Phase Facilitate kick-off sessions to produce outputs such as Business Model Canvas, User Personas, Stakeholder Maps, and Problem Statements. Conduct and synthesize user research , including interview scripts, topic maps, and research findings reports. Present findings during “Inception (Science Fair)” sessions to align business and technical stakeholders. Develop supporting artifacts such as User Storyboards , Technical Service Blueprints , and define business KPIs . 2. Alpha Phase Lead design sprints (e.g., Google Ventures 5-Day Design Sprint) to rapidly test hypotheses. Develop and validate clickable prototypes through usability testing and user feedback. Iterate designs based on research insights and document process changes required to support new solutions. Produce business proposals and define the vision, KPIs, and feature roadmap for the Beta phase . 3. Beta Phase Collaborate within Agile/Scrum environments, participating in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and retrospectives. Create and validate user stories , sketches, wireframes, and design assets for development teams. Conduct regular usability and accessibility compliance testing on the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Continuously refine designs based on testing and feedback. 4. Live Phase Conduct ongoing user research, usability testing, and accessibility assessments. Analyze usage analytics and user behaviour to track and optimize key performance indicators (KPIs) . Drive continuous improvement by iterating live services to meet evolving user needs. Required Skills and Experience User Experience Design (40%) Minimum 3 years in UX design across complex digital projects using user-centred and agile methodologies. Strong experience applying mobile-first and responsive design principles. Skilled in facilitating user research, usability testing , and accessibility reviews. Formal education in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Usability, or related field. Relationship Management (20%) Proven collaboration and mediation skills across business and technical teams. Experience in change management and stakeholder engagement throughout all delivery phases. Ability to work effectively within a balanced Agile product team (product owner, designers, developers). Technical Skills (30%) Expertise in UX/UI design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Cloud, InVision, Axure, JustInMind, Zeplin . Familiarity with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Node.js) is an asset. Soft Skills (10%) Strong communication, presentation, and storytelling abilities. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to write clear, user-friendly content for designs. Collaborative mindset with enthusiasm for working in distributed teams. Additional Requirements Must provide a design portfolio demonstrating knowledge of the Service Design process and methodology .
