Job Description
Control Systems Engineer Location: West Midlands Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm) Salary: Competitive, depending on experience About the Role We’re looking for a skilled and motivated Control Systems Engineer to join our Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) team in West Midlands. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer who thrives on problem-solving and enjoys working on complex automation and control systems within a busy manufacturing environment. You’ll be an essential part of our site engineering team, supporting the reliability, safety, and continuous improvement of our control systems. Reporting directly to the Electrical & Instrumentation Manager, you’ll play a key role in maintaining, developing, and upgrading control and safety systems across the site. Key Responsibilities * Maintain and troubleshoot control system issues to ensure plant uptime and reliability. * Design, specify, and install control and safety systems, including PLCs, BPCS, SIS, DCS, SCADA, and HMI. * Manage system changes by reviewing, approving, and implementing modifications under formal Management of Change (MOC) processes. * Collaborate effectively across departments and liaise with control system suppliers, system integrators, and contractors. * Ensure safety and compliance, promoting a strong safety culture in all installation and maintenance work. * Support and train team members on control systems and best engineering practices. Skills & Experience We’re looking for someone with a strong technical background in automation and control systems, ideally within a manufacturing or process environment. You should have: * Proven experience with Allen Bradley systems (RSLogix 500, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View). * A solid understanding of functional safety, including SIL, LOPA, and Safety Instrumented Systems. * Familiarity with standards such as BS/IEC 61003, 61131, 61508, 61511, and 62443. * Experience producing and interpreting engineering documentation (Cause & Effect Diagrams, Loop Drawings, Control Philosophy, Schematics, URS/FDS, Datasheets, etc.). * Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Ethernet, DH, Modbus, ProfiNet, Serial, etc.). * Awareness of OT Cyber Security, IIoT, or AI applications (advantageous). * Previous exposure to chemical or large-scale manufacturing environments preferred. * Experience in Hazardous Areas (ATEX) and Intrinsic Safety desirable. * Competence in AutoCAD or similar engineering drawing tools. Qualifications * Minimum HNC in Controls, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering (or equivalent). * At least 5 years’ post-HNC experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment. * A flexible, proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
