Principal Mechanical Engineer

RC Fornax, a veteran-owned engineering consultancy supporting the aerospace and defence industries, is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer. This position will serve as the primary technical interface for customers, coordinating with manufacturers and test facilities to maintain design integrity, performance, and compliance throughout project delivery. Work Pattern - Hybrid, 3 days onsite Contract- Outside IR35 Key Responsibilities: Support the design, analysis, and validation of mechanical components and systems using FEA and CFD techniques. Provide design sign-off and ensure all mechanical design activities comply with applicable standards, processes, and project requirements. Oversee the design lifecycle from concept through to build, ensuring quality and compliance are maintained throughout. Produce, review, and approve technical documentation to support on-time and compliant project delivery. Coordinate and manage all CAD activities to ensure accurate and efficient design outputs across multiple design tools. Liaise with internal teams, external suppliers, and testing partners to resolve technical challenges and support project delivery. Essential Qualifications and Experience: Proven experience in a Mechanical Design Engineering role within a complex engineering environment. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent professional experience. Working knowledge of defence or regulated industry mechanical design standards. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Desirable Qualifications and Experience: Experience in defence or marine-related engineering projects. Understanding of mechanical design within naval or platform management systems. Knowledge or experience of shock, vibration, EMC, and climatic testing. Familiarity with defence project lifecycles and compliance requirements. Due to the nature of this project , successful candidate must hold Active SC Clearance and be sole British national.
